Selecting a Shiba Inu for Your Family

Among the Japanese breeds of dogs, the smallest is the Shiba Inu breed. Shiba Inu puppies, or simply Shibas, usually have dark snouts, upright ears, and they bear a great resemblance to foxes. The puppies may be of various colors but usually, they have a reddish coat. The Shiba Inu is frequently used by stuffed toy manufacturers as a model for their toys because of its general appeal. If you want to get one, you should first understand that the selection process is not based solely on cuteness. You should select based on intelligence instead. Shiba Inu puppies deserve some research before you commit to adding this dog to your home.

You have to devote a great deal of your time because Shiba Inu puppies are inclined to be aggressive. They also make good watchdogs because of their defensive nature. You need to train yours well in order for them to become vigorous and jovial members of the family. You can get lots of information on Shiba Inu from breeders and the internet.

Also, they need to exercise daily and their coat should be well maintained. They are not meant as outside pets. Rather, they are sensitive and prefer to live as members of the family. For these reasons, you should choose a puppy that would be easier for you to train. It is very important to learn all you can about Shiba Inu before you purchase a dog. Listed hereunder are the steps you must take when selecting a Shiba Inu puppy to breed.

1.) Select whether to go for a male or a male puppy. Both of them have their own pros and cons but the males, in the main, are more stable. Then again, if they are not taught well on how to socialize, they can be quite aggressive. The female puppies are usually moodier but can present a gentle side as well. Decide whether to go for a male that is easier to train or a female that will have regular mood swings but produce babies.

2.) Refer to the standards set by the American Kennel Colony. If you are seriously planning to breed your puppy, it must be consistent with the standards. According to AKC, the only colors accepted for Shiba Inu puppies are “black with tan points and sesame” and “bright red-orange”. In addition, the colors should have a whitish undercoat referred to as “urajiro”. In addition, according to AKC, the hind legs of all Shiba Inu puppies must not dewclaws on them. Otherwise, you need to have them removed through surgery. It is also a must for your puppy to be properly vaccinated for rabies. Woolly or long fur is prohibited for your puppy.

3.) Select a highly-regarded breeder. call him on the phone and ask the significant questions such as if the puppies have already received their initial set of shots, what food does he feed them with, etc. You must make sure that the owner of the puppy you will buy offers full registration with AKC, including the breeding rights.

4.) Check on the puppies yourself. Watch how they interact with one another. Go for the average puppy. You would not want to buy the biggest, meanest puppy of the litter, nor would you wish for a sickly and timid one.

5.) Go purchase the one you have selected!
